November
Cheerleaders often stay after school practicing, making signs or decorating the school. But at the end of a long school day the cheerleaders from Holland Patent High School in Holland Patent, NY, know they won’t be alone. Their coach, Rebecca Shanley, is right there by their sides helping them out every step of the way. Rebecca has been the coach for 5 years and since day one has been dedicated to the cheerleaders and the school.
Zachary Sweer, a member of the cheer squad, says, “The cheerleaders at our school are known for being peppy all of the time. I think this has a lot to do with our coach. She is always saying funny things and cracking jokes with the squad. Her energy rubs off on us and it brings us together as a squad.”
Having cheered in high school and college, Rebecca knows what it takes to be an effective and safe cheerleader. She has the experience and knowledge to bring out the best in the HPHS cheerleaders, and explains how she was able to start the school’s first JV Football Cheer Squad this year.
When the Holland Patent cheerleaders aren’t cheering, they spend their time helping out the community, and recently participated in the Heart Run/Walk and Breast Cancer Awareness walk. For the 2009 Heart Run/Walk, the HPHS cheerleaders sponsored one of their own cheerleaders, who has a heart condition.
Congratulations to Rebecca Shanley for being selected as November’s Coach of the Month.
