As a freshman, Hannah knew her school required her to get involved with a service project throughout her high school years. And she also knew that if she was going to spend four years donating her time to one thing, she wanted it to be meaningful. So she thought about her two favorite things, cheerleading and reading, and those two things inspired her to create the CheeReader program.
CheeReader is a program Hannah started in her home state of North Carolina that arranges for cheerleaders to read one-on-one to children in Kindergarten through 2 nd grade.
Hannah developed a website to get information about CheeReader to fellow cheerleaders that might be interested in starting a program in their home towns. On it, you can learn more about CheeReader, get books suggestions and test your cheerleading trivia! Here are a couple questions from Hannah’s website. See if you know the answers to these questions:
The first cheerleading squads were coed. True or False?
What is the name of the former high school cheerleader who starred in "Because of Winn Dixie" and "The Secret Life of Bees" as well as many other movies?
What board game, originally introduced in 1935, came out with an All-Star cheerleading version in 2008?
To see the answers visit Hannah’s website, they are in the question mark link!
Hannah hopes that one day the program will be in every school district in the country. Because Hannah has done a great job helping other cheerleaders in her community become better leaders with her program, UCA is proud to recognize her for all of her hard work in putting together CheeReader.
